چکیده

We develop new techniques for deriving strong computational lower bounds for a class of well-known NP-hard problems. This class includes weighted satisfiability, dominating set, hitting set, set cover, clique, and independent set. For example, although a trivial enumeration can easily test in time O(nk) if a given graph of n vertices has a clique of size k, we prove that unless an unlikely collapse occurs in parameterized complexity theory, the problem is not solvable in time f(k)no(k) for any function f , even if we restrict the parameter values to be bounded by an arbitrarily small function of n. Under the same assumption, we prove that even if we restrict the parameter values k to be of the order Θ(μ(n)) for any reasonable function μ, no algorithm of running time no(k) can test if a graph of n vertices has a clique of size k. Similar strong lower bounds on the computational complexity are also derived for other NP-hard problems in the above class. Our techniques can be further extended to derive computational lower bounds on polynomial time approximation schemes for NP-hard optimization problems. For example, we prove that the NP-hard distinguishing substring selection problem, for which a polynomial time approximation scheme has been recently developed, has no polynomial time approximation schemes of running time f(1/ )no(1/ ) for any function f unless an unlikely collapse occurs in parameterized complexity theory.

Some Lower Bounds in Parameterized AC^0

We demonstrate some lower bounds for parameterized problems via parameterized classes corresponding to the classical AC0. Among others, we derive such a lower bound for all fptapproximations of the parameterized clique problem and for a parameterized halting problem, which recently turned out to link problems of computational complexity, descriptive complexity, and proof theory. To show the fir...

W-Hardness Under Linear FPT-Reductions: Structural Properties and Further Applications

The notion of linear fpt-reductions has been recently used to derive strong computational lower bounds for well-known NP-hard problems. In this paper, we formally investigate the notions of W [t]-hardness and W [t]-completeness under the linear fpt-reduction, and study structural properties of the corresponding complexity classes. Additional complexity lower bounds on important computational pr...

The Parameterized Complexity of Local Consistency

We investigate the parameterized complexity of deciding whether a constraint network is k-consistent. We show that, parameterized by k, the problem is complete for the complexity class co-W[2]. As secondary parameters we consider the maximum domain size d and the maximum number ` of constraints in which a variable occurs. We show that parameterized by k + d, the problem drops down one complexit...

Parameterized complexity analysis in computational biology

Many computational problems in biology involve parameters for which a small range of values cover important applications. We argue that for many problems in this setting, parameterized computational complexity rather than NP-completeness is the appropriate tool for studying apparent intractability. At issue in the theory of parameterized complexity is whether a problem can be solved in time O(n...
